Culture
The ‘Jesus Movement’ of the late 1960’s and 70’s birthed an influx of new believers and churches throughout the US, eventually spreading throughout the modern world.
The Spirit of God moved upon the hearts of many, and thousands of people were baptised in the coves of Southern California.
The movement started through hippie Lonnie Frisbee and pastor Chuck Smith at Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa in California. Through this revival, a new wave of Christian culture emerged.
A passionate, Spirit-filled youth took scene and brought with it modern Rock worship music, street evangelism, and a cultural awakening to Jesus Christ.
This movement spread rapidly and lives on to this day. The Holy Spirit of God is alive and is continually awakening new believers into truth and communion with God through Jesus Christ.
Thanks to this revolution, we have a new sub culture rich in advancing Christ’s ministry.
We can learn a lot from these counter culture pioneers.
Take Arthur Blessitt for example: This preacher literally ‘took up his cross’ and followed Jesus around the world for 56+ years.
Starting in Hollywood, CA in 1968- he carried a 12 ft wooden cross across every continent, sharing the gospel everywhere he went.
Arrested, beaten and ridiculed for his faith, he remained faithful to his calling until his passing in early 2025.
Arthur had traversed 294 nations, island groups and territories and witnessed to millions of people! His legacy lives on through those who have come to faith from his mission of love.
“Jesus. People. Music.
That was the sequence of things. First the faith, experiencing a revival in the Summer of Love. Then, people gathered in song, raising their voices over the rock & roll sounds that came naturally to them. All along the West Coast, then throughout the country, tiny fires of the Holy Spirit began catching among longhaired youths. Their fellow hippies labeled these countercultural Christians “Jesus Freaks,” but before long, Jesus People were self-identifying using the term.
‘The End Is At Hand’ is the first volume in a series of compilations that exemplify the sound of the Jesus People movement of the 1960’s and 70’s in America. From Spokane, Washington to northern New Jersey, devoted musical groups were embracing the psychedelic overtones of the bohemian lifestyle, and intertwining their faith with the spirit of the times. The need to proclaim the End of Days produced some of the most fiery music of the genre—fuzzy hymns backed by cosmic choirs and heavy psych populated with frightening scenes from the Book of Revelation—but the songbook and its lyrical focus was varied, populated with lo-fi loner folk, simmering with yearning hope, and tripped out countrified songs about eternal devotion as well.” - Aquarium Drunkard ; Online music magazine
